Katherine Swarts I learned far more [in this class] than I thought I would. The homework assignments stretched me and made me think. I learned as much doing the assignments as I did reading the lessons. The assignments challenged me as if I actually had clients. I now have templates for several types of letters, my brochure is almost complete and ready to hand out, and my pricing structure is set. The lessons were explained well. If there was something I didn't understand, I asked Kathy, and she quickly responded. Jeanne Marie Leach The lessons were very clear. The homework was easy. (People with kids and spouses and editing and other jobs, etc. don't need the stress of difficult homework!) I liked having the choices every week-I could usually find something I felt comfortable doing. Kathy did a good job of getting the points across without stressing me out with homework. Ellen Tarver I enjoyed the course and learned about the business side of editing. The lessons clearly defined the steps necessary to edit fiction and nonfiction books. Kathy personally giving feedback was terrific. I enjoyed the homework assignments. They made me think; I liked that. I was happy to be able to choose how many of the optional assignments I did. When I had a really full week, it was nice to be able to choose one assignment only. I loved reading everyone else's assignments and Kathy's comments about the assignments. I learned a lot from them. Pat Stockett Johnston I greatly enjoyed this course, and it was absolutely worth the price. It was the perfect blend of promotional work and practical copyediting/proofreading skills. I was surprised to find optional assignments that were "promotional" in the early lessons. However, while at first I was a bit intimidated to do this right out of the gate, I soon realized this was very beneficial. It helped me understand the different areas of editing & proofreading, as well as helping to clarify my goals. I also appreciated the wonderful interaction between the students. The optional assignments were perfect. We had a wide variety in some cases, and that enabled us to choose what fit best into our schedules or met our individual needs. I'd definitely recommend this course to anyone who is starting out in the editing field, or even those who may be wondering if editing/proofreading might be something they'd like to do. The overview of the various areas really helps a person to realize what a wide variety of projects editing can cover and the varied range of skills needed for each. What makes a good fiction editor is totally different from what makes a good non-fiction editor. Great class! Sheryl Root The lessons were very clear and easy to understand. They were thought-provoking and made me think outside of the box. Kathy did a good job of covering all the basics. The assignments were good and gave us the opportunity to pick and choose. I even enjoyed taking a look at the fiction lessons, because they made me step out of my comfort zone. I will never be a fiction editor or writer, but it's good to know both nonfiction and fiction. I cannot tell you how many times in the past eight weeks I used something that I learned in this course. The material presented far exceeded, in both content and depth, the expectations I had before course's beginning. To be blunt, this course is a "steal" in terms of the benefit gained for the nominal cost entailed. The number of optional assignments was just right. I enjoyed the latitude this course allowed in terms of the variety of assignments, both in number and difficulty. Well accommodates the working student. Assignments were challenging but not overly complex. The clarity of the lessons and the instructor's prompt responses to questions from the students ensured that all material was well understood. The instructor encouraged student participation and provided great feedback on homework assignments. Larry Lewis This course had more things in it than I ever knew was involved in copyediting and proofreading. I had a lot of fun in this class. It was wonderful to meet and work with such a great group of people. This course more than met my expectations. Laura Evans This was my first online course and I wasn't sure what to expect. But this class was definitely worth both the time involved and the money. It covered the basics thoroughly. The optional assignments were well thought out to assure that we had to really think about the material. I appreciated the variety of assignments, which allowed us to move in the direction we were interested in and also allowed for the diversity of personalities. The concept of optional assignments is a good one, as it caused us to get more directly involved, not only with the lesson, but with one another. The lessons were clear, and Kathy was quick to answer any questions. Her answers were thorough and gracious, never making the questioner feel foolish for asking. The best part of the class was gaining new knowledge about a subject that interests me. We had a friendly and involved group. I've taken several correspondence courses, and enjoyed them for the learning, but they lacked the give-and-take of a classroom experience. This course has that, without the time restraint of a formal classroom. What did I like least about the class? THAT IT'S OVER! I'm going to miss everyone involved in the course. It's absolutely the best thing I've done for myself in a very long time. The class met and exceeded all my expectations. There was a good balance of lessons and homework. All the lessons were very helpful for me since I'm just starting to look at my clients with an editorial eye. The class interaction was a real added bonus.
